Road gullies, which require a hinged grating on top are designed to collect surface water, allowing silt/debris to settle in the base of the chamber and water to exit. Trapped gullies are used where there is a possibility of odour escaping from the drain pipe. This can be the situation where you have a combined storm and foul system.
